Sustainability

Everyone can play their part, including us.

What Have We Been Doing?

We think actions speak louder than words when it comes to sustainability. As one of our four core values here at the School of Applied Mental Health, sustainability is more than lip service. Take a look at what we have achieved so far and our honest thoughts on where we hope to improve:

Green Electricity

We use 100% renewable electricity which is sourced from solar, wind and hydro. Our biggest sustainability impact is in electricity so its important we get this right.

Carbon Neutral Gas

We use gas for our heating and hot water but chose a supplier who offsets the carbon footprint with projects around the world. Some of this gas also comes from renewable sources like food and farm waste.

Hosting

With so much of our content online, our choice of hosting has to be green. Our hosting provider is committed to reducing their environmental impact and already utilises 100% renewable energy for their UK data centres and office, energy efficient hardware and wider business practices to reduce their environmental impact.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

It may have fallen out of fashion to more gimmicky or snazzy terms but the principle of reduce, reuse, recycle is simple and effective. Here at SAMH our impact might be small but we believe small steps add up. We are as paperless as possible, always aim to re-use existing resources and are conscious of the choices we make.

Sustainable Products

As part of our role in decreasing the legacy of mental health stigma, we chose an ethical and sustainable supplier to make all the products in our shop. From the ecosystem in which the organic cotton is grown, through to supporting the communities who work on the t-shirts, hoodies and totes, we wanted a supplier to upheld our values. What’s Next?

There is always more to be done and always a higher standard we can work towards. We commit to continually improving our own services and those who we rely on (such as petitioning our course software platform to be transparent about their sustainability policy).
