Certificate in Self-Care for Mental Health Professionals

Introduction

Those of us who work in mental health are often faced with a difficult question: how do we care for our own wellbeing when we dedicate ourselves to caring for others?

Over the course of this CPD training you will explore why self-care is important for mental health professionals and practitioners and how to make it work for you. By the end of the 2 hours, you will have the skills, resources and tools to prioritise your own wellbeing in the challenging world we live in, both now and into the future.

Throughout the course you will find academic and scientific research interwoven with practical tips and techniques for working self-care into your daily routine. The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed our mental health services to the limits but also the staff who support it.

As with all of our training, each of the modules is broken down into manageable sections, so you can pick up and leave the course to fit around your other commitments.

Self-care is a career long way to support your own mental and physical wellbeing (at home and work) as well as improving your professional skills.

Course Structure

CPD takes precious time out of day so we have worked to ensure this course brings clear benefits to your working (and personal) life. To do this, the course is broken into three learning themes which work together to help you to create a practical and career long self-care plan:

·        Understanding the need for self-care

·        Overcoming barriers that can prevent good wellbeing and might have stopped your previous efforts

·        Complete and implement your own self-care plan

Course modules include:

Course module list: Module 1 - Understand, Module 2 - Overcome, Module 3 - Implement, Module 4 - Course Summary

Within the modules we will cover such topics as:

      • What is compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress and vicarious trauma?
      • Why are mental health professions more at risk from poor mental health and how we might avoid or minimise the potential for harm?
      • How to write a self-care plan that works with practical tips as well as theory (including a worksheet and activities)

Who is it for?

We have specifically designed the course to help those who are already trained to support the mental health of others. For example, the following professions may benefit from the course:

      • Counsellors and therapists
      • Mental health nurses

      • Mental Health Practitioners
      • Healthcare or charity/voluntary workers who deal with the mental health of individuals

It is also suitable for students who are training to become qualified in this area.
